How to Clean Cloth Car Seats

Cloth seats collect dust, sweat, spills and stains you don’t notice — until one day you notice all of them. With the right tools and without soaking the fabric, you can get them much cleaner at home. Here’s the method, step by step.

What you’ll need

  • A vacuum with a brush attachment and a crevice tool.
  • An automotive upholstery cleaner (or a few drops of mild soap in warm water).
  • A soft-bristle brush.
  • Several clean microfiber towels.
  • Optional: a wet/dry vacuum to pull out moisture.

Step by step

  1. Vacuum thoroughly. Brush the surface to loosen dust and use the crevice tool along seams and between the backrest and the seat. Cleaning over loose dirt just turns it into mud.
  2. Spot-test the cleaner. Try a little on a hidden area to make sure it doesn’t bleed color or leave a mark.
  3. Use less product than you think. Spray small sections. The goal is to dampen the surface of the fabric, not soak the foam underneath.
  4. Agitate with the brush. Gentle strokes in several directions lift dirt out of the fibers.
  5. Lift the dirt out. Blot with a clean microfiber towel — don’t scrub. If you have a wet/dry vac, use it to extract the dirty liquid.
  6. Dry completely. Leave the windows open in a safe, ventilated spot. A seat that stays damp inside can develop a musty smell.

Common stains

Coffee and soda

Act fast: blot with a dry towel first, then treat the area with upholstery cleaner, working from the edge of the stain toward the center so it doesn’t spread.

Grease and food

Remove any solids and blot the excess. An upholstery cleaner with some degreasing power usually beats plain water; it may take more than one pass.

Water rings

These show up when you clean just one spot and it dries with an edge. Avoid them by cleaning the whole seat panel evenly.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Soaking the seat: the foam takes a long time to dry and can start to smell musty.
  • Harsh products: bleach or strong household cleaners can discolor the fabric.
  • Scrubbing hard: it frays the fibers and spreads the stain.
